Biography
DesRochers is an emerging queer multidisciplinary artist from Montreal, whose engaged practice is in the visual arts and music. The artist’s works have been presented in two solo exhibitions, Accidentellement (2020) and L’Île M (2022), as well as during collective exhibitions, such as the annual auctions of Commu’Art, where they are awarded the Paul Marechal Prize. In 2020, in revolt against the numerous denunciations of sexual violence against women and queer people, the artist designed their work For Our Girls, a quilt made up of pieces of fabric collected from survivors.
Alongside their approach, they accompany various musical artists in the artistic direction and styling of their projects, such as Michaëlle Richer, Béli, Bermuda and Lhéfé. They are also a guest artist for socio-artistic intervention projects in various community organizations, especially for people who identify as women, queer, or living with an ID or ASD.
Approach and works on display
In a world where virtual experience and social networks rule, DesRochers seeks direct contact with physical matter, a tangible entry into the sensory world. Shaped by the richness of memories and transgenerational memories, their work is the result of the accumulation of data, writings, textiles transformations and objects from their daily life or family environment. Through performances or immersive sound and visual installations, DesRochers examines the past to better understand and question identity behaviors, such as the legacy of ingrained reflexes associated with the female gender.
